BOSTON – Eva Millona, President and CEO of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), issued the following statement in response to the confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
“MIRA extends our heartfelt congratulations to Alejandro Mayorkas, who made history today when he was confirmed as the first immigrant and first Latino to serve as Homeland Security Secretary. We believe that Secretary Mayorkas’ strong leadership and vision will help restore the standing of the Department of Homeland Security as it embraces an immigration agenda that ensures immigrants and refugees are treated with dignity and respect. Secretary Mayorkas has a proven record of service to our country and has demonstrated his firm belief that immigrants and refugees make our country stronger. MIRA looks forward to partnering with him to reverse the unworkable policies of the past four years and move forward towards a more humane immigration system that works for everyone, including expanding DACA and TPS protections, rescinding the new public charge rule, and pursuing alternatives to detention.”
