What is this petition for?

What is the goal for the Petition? This petition is more than a way to collect signatures. It is an organizing tool to build MIRA’s people power across Massachusetts and strengthen our ability to win policy change, hold elected officials accountable, and build long-term immigrant and refugee political power.

MIRA’s advocacy is strongest when immigrants, refugees, community members, allies, and voters are ready to take action. The petition will help us turn people who support immigrant and refugee rights into an engaged statewide network that can show up, speak out, contact legislators, volunteer, organize others, and hold elected officials accountable.

The petition will help MIRA:

  • Expand our base of individual supporters beyond our organizational membership and coalition partners.
  • Expand our advocacy outreach by building a larger list of people who want to receive legislative updates and opportunities to take action.
  • Increase our legislative action capacity by identifying people who are willing to contact their legislators, attend hearings, testify, participate in rallies, and take other actions when important legislation is being considered.
  • Build a statewide volunteer base by identifying supporters who want to become more deeply involved in MIRA’s organizing work in their communities.
  • Identify and develop emerging leaders who can bring additional people into the movement and help build immigrant and refugee political power locally.
  • Create a stronger accountability structure for elected officials by demonstrating that there is a broad and growing constituency paying attention to how legislators act on issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Strengthen MIRA’s long-term organizing infrastructure by creating an ongoing pathway from supporter → participant → volunteer → community leader.

From Support to Power

Ultimately, the petition gives MIRA a way to convert support into action. We want to know more than whether someone agrees with MIRA’s values.

We want to know:
Who is ready to take action?
Who will contact their legislator?
Who will show up at the State House?
Who will volunteer in their community?
Who will bring five more people into the movement?
Who is ready to help us organize?

The goal is to build a larger, more engaged statewide base of people who can move with MIRA when it matters.
