BOSTON – Immigrants directly impacted by the Trump administration’s dangerous, xenophobic policies will join the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition, state lawmakers, and advocates to rally in support of immigrants at the 29th annual Immigrants Day at the State House event.
“We here in Massachusetts know that immigrants are essential members of our communities, strengthening our economy and enriching our culture,” said Elizabeth Sweet, Executive Director of the MIRA Coalition. “This year’s Immigrants Day at the State House will show loud and clear that we are not afraid to oppose the president’s harmful, hateful executive orders. By working together we can show the nation that Massachusetts will proudly and tirelessly fight for immigrants.”
Centered on the theme, “Together in Action,” Immigrants Day at the State House will celebrate recent legislative gains for the immigrant community, and highlight steps Beacon Hill must take to protect immigrant neighbors amid the Trump administration’s wave of anti-immigrant executive orders. This includes the Safe Communities Act (S.1681 and H.2580), which would prevent local law enforcement from doing ICE’s job for it, and the Immigrant Legal Defense Act (SD.1127/HD.1954), which would help provide immigrants at risk of deportation with legal representation.
The event will also feature remarks from Suyanne Amaral, whose husband was unjustly detained by ICE in Marlborough earlier this year, imprisoned in Texas, and rarely able to communicate with his family. While he is now home, her husband remains at risk of deportation. Suyanne’s story reminds us how important it is to resist inhumane treatment of immigrants.
