Press Statement – MIRA’s response to the federal administration’s announcement that the IRS will be sharing sensitive information with DHS

Press Statement
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 9, 2025

Elizabeth Sweet, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy
(MIRA) Coalition today issued the following statement condemning the Trump administration’s
announcement that the Internal Revenue Service will share tax information of immigrants
without status with the Department of Homeland Security.“Allowing the Department of Homeland Security to access private, sensitive taxpayer
information violates a years-long promise that immigrants without status would not be
punished for filing their taxes. DHS is not just endangering immigrants without status that have
dutifully paid their taxes every year, but actively discouraging immigrants from filing taxes out
of fear that they will be targeted. Immigrants without status pay tens of billions of dollars in
taxes each year and the last thing our nation should do is punish them for it and cost vital social
programs billions in needed taxpayer money along the way.”
