PRESS STATEMENT For Immediate Release January 26, 2026

BOSTON, MA – In response to continued violence perpetrated by federal immigration officers, Elizabeth Sweet, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition, issued the following statement:
“Another senseless death on the streets of Minneapolis and still too few of our leaders are demanding change. There is no justification for either of these killings and, beyond that, no good reason for ICE agents to even be on the streets of our communities doing the job of local law enforcement or deploying militaristic tactics which only make America less safe. MIRA will continue to call on this administration to remove ICE agents from our neighborhoods before there are more avoidable acts of violence. “ICE continues to fail at the primary function of law enforcement – keeping our communities safer. We are deeply saddened by yet another loss of life in Minneapolis and again call for the immediate removal of ICE agents from our communities. MIRA also joins with others across the country in calling on Congress to reject any additional funding for DHS until this administration withdraws from Minnesota and shows respect for all those in our communities.”
