This Mother’s Day we’re thinking about all the immigrant mothers.
The immigrant mothers who made the brave decision to start new chapters in a foreign environment. The immigrant mothers who nurture and guide their children through the challenging transitions of assimilating in America. The immigrant mothers who aren’t afraid to talk with their thick accents. The immigrant mothers who made sure their children knew where they came from and the richness of their culture. The immigrant mothers who work several jobs. The immigrant mothers who still mother their children, even past the age of 18.
We’re thinking of our immigrant mothers.
This Mother’s Day we’re thinking of immigrant mothers who are separated from their families. The mothers who are detained. The mothers who have been deported. The mothers who have experienced multiple forms of violence and still, stay resilient. The mothers who are fighting against an unjust system. The mothers who only wish to be reunited with the people they love.
We’re thinking of our immigrant mothers.
This Mother’s Day, we’re thinking of the mothers of the immigrant justice movement. The ones who speak out against injustice, even if their voice shakes, even if their English is “not very good looking,” even if they’re the only ones. We’re thinking of the mothers who make sure to include the disadvantaged voices in the room. The mothers who make their own tables and create their own networks. The pro-immigrant mothers who are childless but still nurture their community members in multiple ways. The pro-immigrant mothers who make it their goal to dismantle xenophobia.
We’re thinking of our immigrant mothers.
This Mother’s Day, whether you have the privilege of celebrating with your immigrant mother, or have an estranged relationship, or are still healing from loss or heartbreak, we hope you find some peace today.
Please know that the MIRA Coalition will never stop advocating for YOU. Thank you for all your sacrifices, your genuine love and commitment to healing this world. Happy Mother’s Day.
