Boston, MA – In response to the Biden Administration‘s move to expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, Elizabeth Sweet, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition issued the following statement:
“We are appreciative that the Biden administration is embracing and protecting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy by working to transform it into federal regulation. Transforming DACA into a federal regulation helps to protect the policy from future legal challenges. However, litigation is ongoing and may impact the implementation of the regulation.
“Protecting DACA, not only benefits recipients – it benefits all Americans. DACA recipients annually pay billions in taxes, as well as billions in rent and mortgage payments. DACA recipients work in a variety of fields, from healthcare to Fortune 500 companies. They are a crucial element of America’s economy and society.
“To best protect DACA recipients, Congress must pass comprehensive immigration reform that paves a permanent path to citizenship for undocumented individuals that arrived in the U.S. as children. This legal measure would protect eligible individuals well beyond the Biden administration‘s tenure when Executive attitudes toward the policy could change.”
