WordPress Web Designer – Nonprofit Website Redesign (Design Phase)
We’re seeking an experienced web designer to lead the visual redesign of our human rights nonprofit’s WordPress website and create a simple sister site for our 501(c)(4) affiliate. We’ve completed organizational rebranding and user research across departments, and need a designer to translate this into modern, cohesive design systems that our team can easily maintain.
About the Project: Our main website is a comprehensive resource hub that’s well-functioning but outdated in appearance and needs reorganization. Rather than rebuilding from scratch, our developer will clone the existing site and implement your designs on the staging environment, preserving all existing content and functionality. The sister site is new and will be simple, with its own related branding.
Scope:
- Review existing main site structure, departmental requirements, and user research
- Apply our new brand identity to main website redesign
- Develop cleaner, more modern, more compelling visual experience
- Create visual design mockups for key page templates on both sites
- Develop WordPress-specific style guides and component libraries for both properties
- Design sister site with separate but complementary branding (branding has been developed)
- Ensure designs work within WordPress/Gutenberg native capabilities
- Enhanced user experience/journey for several different user groups
Deliverables:
- Design mockups (desktop and mobile) for main site
- Design mockups for sister site (3-5 page templates)
- Asset files and specifications for developer handoff
- Documentation for non-technical content editors
- One training/walkthrough session
Requirements:
- Portfolio demonstrating WordPress site redesigns (not just custom builds from scratch)
- Experience designing for existing content and complex site structures
- Understanding of WordPress block editor capabilities and limitations
- Experience designing for non-technical content editors with focus on usability
- Ability to create design systems that work across related properties
- Strong communication skills and collaborative approach
- Nonprofit/mission-driven sector experience strongly preferred
What We Have:
- Completed organizational branding refresh
- Existing research, content audit, and departmental input
- Existing WordPress site with extensive content that will remain in place
- Experienced developer for implementation and ongoing maintenance
- Design-literate project lead who will maintain sites day-to-day
What We’re Looking For: We need designs that are modern and visually compelling while being practical for our context: minimal plugins, clean code, intuitive for staff editors without web experience, and straightforward for ongoing maintenance. Our website serves multiple distinct functions and we’d like them all to work smoothly. We hope to improve mobile user experience, ease of navigation to access resources, while maintaining accessibility, and improve user experience for multiple groups, including donors. We want to continue working with our current developer, so this is strictly a design and specification project.
