Federal court orders pause on new fees on pending asylum applications

A federal court has decided that asylum seekers are not currently required to pay the $100 annual fee for pending asylum applications.

This pause may be only temporary. You can obtain the most up to date information from the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project.

Under a federal law that took effect in July 2025, asylum seekers with pending asylum applications are required to pay a $100 fee every year. This requirement was challenged in a lawsuit and has been put on hold by a federal court.
