Federal Policy Update – 5/8/25

  • A Federal appeals court ordered the return of a Tufts student in immigration detention to Vermont from Louisiana. Though Rümeysa Öztürk still remains detained by ICE more than a month after her arrest, a hearing to consider her release has now been scheduled.
  • The media reported on Department of Homeland Security plans to deport individuals to Libya, despite numerous reports documenting abusive conditions in immigrant detention centers there.  The administration has already carried out deportations to El Salvador, Panama, and Costa Rica of individuals from other nationalities, and is reportedly seeking agreements from additional countries.
  • The Trump Administration has asked the Supreme Court to review on an emergency basis a lower federal court’s decision halting the administration’s termination of TPS for Venezuelans. The Administration had announced it would withdraw the extension of the 2023 designation of TPS for Venezuelans which would have ended protections on April 7, but that decision was put on hold by a California federal court. The Supreme Court will be receiving briefing on this issue today (May 8) and a decision is likely to be issued relatively quickly.
