Policy Update – 6/12/25

  • While our hearts go out to communities under siege in LA, word has emerged that the administration is planning similar enforcement actions in 5 other areas of the country: Seattle, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and northern Virginia. This all follows on an acrimonious meeting between White House advisor Stephen Miller and ICE Field Office Directors from across the country, where Miller rebuked ICE for not meeting the administration’s goal of 3,000 immigrant arrests in a year and dropped any pretense that the administration’s enforcement efforts have anything to do with criminals or public safety.  Protests are and will continue across the country.
  • On Thursday, Republicans on the House’s Homeland Security Committee sent a letter to over 200 nonprofits across the country that serve immigrant communities with federal funds. The letter is not a subpoena, but rather a request for information and directs organizations to an online questionnaire. Advocates and lawyers who have received or reviewed the questionnaire are confused because the vast majority of information requested is already a matter of public record. Although MIRA has not received one of these letters (yet) many of our sister coalitions across the country have. If your organization is in receipt of such a letter, please make sure that your organization consults a qualified attorney before deciding on whether and how to respond. MIRA would also like to track who in Massachusetts is in receipt of these letters, please reach out to Sarang Sekhavat (ssekhavat@miracoalition.org) if you receive one from the Committee.
