Boston, MA – This week the Trump administration announced their plan to require all immigrants without status over the age of 14 to register with the U.S. Government and provide fingerprints or risk criminal prosecution. In response, Elizabeth Sweet, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition, issued the following statement:
“Forcing immigrants to register with the federal government calls to mind our nation’s horrid treatment and forceful internment of Japanese-Americans during the Second World War. The Trump administration continues to employ hateful tactics that demonize all immigrants, encroach on their rights, and fuel more fear in immigrant communities. Beyond that, the Trump administration persists in creating vague, overarching policies that leave immigrants and advocates without necessary details on how to proceed. The data proves that immigrants power our economy and commit fewer crimes than U.S.-born citizens. We urge the Trump administration not to implement this harmful, hateful proposal.”
