Take Action Now – Post-Election Remarks from MIRA’s Executive Director Liz Sweet

For many immigrants, as well as  their friends and family, Tuesday’s election result was a shock. We are facing the reality that 72 million Americans are willing to support mass deportations and ugly anti-immigrant rhetoric.  And not just anti-immigrant words but hate against so many groups, many of whom make up our communities here in Massachusetts.

The years ahead will not be easy for immigrants.  Resilient as so many immigrants are, no one should have to be resilient in the face of this kind of hate and scapegoating.

Now is the time to take action as we stand together for all immigrants.

For the MIRA Coalition, our staff and 140+ member organizations, our mission for these coming years is unchanged.  We will continue to get up each day and work for the rights and inclusion of all immigrants in our Commonwealth.  We will speak out against any and all attempts to detain, deport and marginalize immigrants, especially our neighbors and colleagues. We will continue to lift up the many positive contributions centuries of immigration have made  to Massachusetts and our nation, from critical participation in our workforce to our cultural fabric.

And we will come together in community.

With deep gratitude,
Liz
